Dress-Up a Vase For Your Party

Everyone knows that you can dress up a table, or a room, for that matter, with fresh flowers in a lovely vase. Of course, dried flowers are appropriate in the colonial, country, or shabby chic home. And vibrant silk flowers go anywhere at all.

Silk flowers have long been staples of vase decorations, because they're not only very pretty, but they also last for a long, long time with low maintenance. You can also get sprays that mimic flower smells, and really good silk flowers look just like real ones.

But in your little country cottage, you can also use a hand crafted knitted flower in your vase for a stunning effect. They aren't difficult to make if you know how to knit, purl, decrease your stitches, and read a pattern. They are made using needles that are double pointed...use old knitting needles of varying heights as the stems.

For that matter, if you don't know how to knit, just roll several colors of yarn into balls, and place them in a clear vase, for a creative way to carry through your color scheme.

If you always keep fresh flowers in the house, you can use a large clear bowl for them, add some pebbles in the bottom, a piece of live seaweed, and a goldfish. But make sure you use the correct water and feed it regularly. And change the flowers promptly when they are dying. Believe it or not, having something fresh in your vase, especially during the winter months, serves as a reminder of spring, lifts your spirits and keeps things smelling nice. But there are lots of things that look attractive in a vase that are not flowers. If fresh flowers aren't your thing, then try some other stuff that will add to the... decor of your home.
